Traditional Arts

Paper-cut, embroidery, new-year prints, thangka — folk image-making by hand

Traditional arts ICH spans paper-cutting (UNESCO 2009), the four famous embroideries (Suzhou, Hunan, Sichuan, Guangdong), new-year print traditions (Yangliuqing, Wuqiang, Yangjiabu, Mianzhu), thangka, clay figurines and shadow-puppet carving. Rooted in festival custom, myth and religious narrative, they press folk aesthetics into paper, cloth, wood, clay and mineral pigment. Naxi dongba painting and Tibetan Karma Gadri thangka condense a people's cosmology into pictorial convention — living visual epics.
