清水河風景区

Qingshui River Scenic Area is a quieter natural site on the western side of the wider Xingyi karst region in southwestern Guizhou, sitting upstream of the more famous Malinghe Gorge. The Qingshui ("Clear Water") is in fact the upper reach of the Maling River, and the scenic area preserves the gentler, more open character of the karst plateau before the river cuts down into its dramatic gorge downstream.

The landscape is a softer version of what Xingyi is famous for: forested karst ridges, meandering clear streams, low waterfalls dropping over limestone steps, and patches of terraced farmland clinging to the slopes. Compared with the main Malinghe Gorge, the valley here is wider and less enclosed, the walking is easier, and the crowds are smaller — making Qingshui a useful alternative for travelers who want a peaceful nature walk rather than a busy marquee attraction.

Main features include a series of small waterfalls and pools, old trees along the riverbank, and the dramatic Qingshui River Bridge — one of the highest and longest bridge structures in the region, whose deck spans the valley high above the river. The contrast between the ancient karst landscape and the modern engineering of the bridge is one of the area's signature views. Several small caves and cliff-side shrines are also accessible on foot from the main trail.

Trails in the scenic area are mostly flat or gently sloping and follow the river for several kilometers, so visitors can choose how far to walk based on time and energy. The forest cover is dense, which makes Qingshui a particularly pleasant destination in the heat of a Guizhou summer. Bird life is rich, and the river itself runs clear enough to see fish in the deeper pools.

For independent travelers, Qingshui River is best treated as a half-day nature stop for those who have already seen the headline sights of the Xingyi area. It is not a destination to fly across China for, but as a quiet escape from the busy main scenic areas, it is a rewarding detour — particularly in spring or autumn when the water flow is comfortable and the walking weather is at its best.
