The Maling River rafting stretch is one of the most popular commercial whitewater trips in southwest China, running through the lower section of Malinghe Gorge near Xingyi in Guizhou province. The trip follows the same "Beautiful Scar of the Earth" canyon that draws hikers and sightseers to its boardwalks, but instead of viewing the gorge from above, rafters travel along its base — passing rapids, deep green pools, and cliff panels decorated with hanging waterfalls and moss.

The route is graded as family-friendly but exciting: over its length the river drops through many rapids, bends, and pools, and the canyon walls close in to heights that block direct sunlight for much of the day. Water levels vary through the year — higher flows in summer produce bigger wave trains and a faster ride, while spring and autumn offer clearer water and gentler rapids. Operators describe the run as runnable year-round, with the character of the river changing with the volume.

What sets this trip apart visually is the scenery. Because the gorge is so narrow, rafters float directly below the curtain waterfalls and travertine formations that day-trippers only see from the upper boardwalks. The cliff faces — sometimes streaked with mineral colors that locals describe as a "mural" — rise almost vertically above the boats. Several historic relics, including old bridges, suspension walkways, and temple ruins, are tucked into alcoves along the way, giving the run a cultural dimension that most whitewater trips lack.

Practicalities matter here. Whitewater trips in China are tightly regulated, and on this stretch the rafts, guides, life jackets, and equipment are organized through the official scenic area operator. Operations can be suspended without much notice due to water levels, weather, or management decisions, so it is essential to confirm locally the day before rather than assuming a fixed schedule. Independent travelers should also bring quick-dry clothes, water shoes, and a dry bag — splash-proof rentals are usually available at the put-in but quality varies.
