万峰林景区

Wanfenglin — literally "Forest of Ten Thousand Peaks" — is the signature 5A-rated karst landscape of Xingyi in southwestern Guizhou province, and one of the finest examples of cone-karst peak-forest topography anywhere in the world. Spread across a broad basin at the southeastern edge of the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau, the scenic area is a dense sea of thousands of conical limestone peaks separated by fertile valleys, streams, and Bouyei farming villages. From any elevated viewpoint the ridge lines seem to roll to the horizon like a frozen green wave — an image that gives the park its name.

The peaks are textbook fengcong (peak cluster) and fenglin (peak forest) karst: limestone laid down in ancient tropical seas has been uplifted, fractured, and slowly dissolved by rainfall over geological time, leaving rounded cones, isolated towers, and karst pinnacles of remarkably uniform height rising above the valley floor. Dense forest cover softens the karst with year-round green tones, and the subtropical plateau climate keeps the air mild even in midsummer, which is why Xingyi is regularly listed among China's most comfortable summer destinations.

Most foreign travelers explore Wanfenglin by rented electric scooter, bicycle, or shared sightseeing vehicle along the valley road that threads between the peaks and the Bouyei villages. The route is essentially flat, scenic, and well marked — popular stops include natural octagonal terraced fields, hillside observation decks facing the main peak cluster, small Buddhist cave temples carved into the karst, and family-run noodle stalls in the villages. It is one of the easiest karst landscapes in China to experience up close rather than only from a distant viewpoint.

The Bouyei (Buyi) people have farmed these valleys for centuries, and their language, dress, cuisine, and festival calendar give the scenery a living cultural layer that pure nature parks cannot match. Bouyei village architecture — stone foundations, wooden upper storeys, tiled roofs — sits comfortably in the landscape, and the local markets sell glutinous-rice five-color meals, pickled vegetables, and chili pastes that travelers rarely find elsewhere in China. The annual Bouyei singing festivals are among southwest China's most colorful ethnic celebrations.

Wanfenglin combines geology, ethnic culture, easy outdoor activity, and distinctive food in a single day-trip from Xingyi — which is why many independent travelers rank it alongside Yangshuo and the Li River as a must-see karst destination in southwest China.
