塔川

Tachuan is a small Huizhou village located between Hongcun and the Mukeng Bamboo Sea in the Huangshan region, best known for its autumn colors, which have made it one of the most celebrated seasonal photography destinations in eastern China. The village itself is a modest cluster of traditional houses stacked up the slope in the manner of a pagoda, giving it the alternative name of "Pagoda Above," but it is the surrounding canopy of tallow trees turning color in late autumn that draws the steady flow of long-lens photographers who have made the village famous.

In late October and through November, the tallow trees around Tachuan shift through shades of green, yellow, orange, and red, with the white walls and dark roofs of the village emerging from the canopy and the fields and smoke from kitchen fires adding foreground interest to the classic Tachuan photograph. At the peak of the autumn color, the village and the surrounding lanes draw large numbers of dedicated photographers arriving for the dawn and dusk shooting windows, and the narrow country lane linking the village to nearby Hongcun can become congested at the most popular times of day.

A visit is generally built around a walk along the country lane between Hongcun and Tachuan, with several marked viewing points along the route offering the classic perspectives on the village and the surrounding canopy, and the most rewarding light comes at the beginning and end of the day when the low sun brings out the warmest tones in the foliage. Outside the brief autumn peak, Tachuan retains a quieter, more everyday village character, with attractive though less dramatic rural scenery, and the lanes between the surrounding villages make for pleasant, low-key walking at any time of year.

For a Huangshan itinerary, Tachuan is the single most rewarding autumn destination in the broader Huangshan region, and visitors arriving in late October or November should make a particular effort to time a visit around the peak color, ideally with an overnight in one of the surrounding villages to catch the best dawn light. It pairs naturally with Hongcun, Mukeng Bamboo Sea, and the broader village circuit, and it offers one of the most concentrated and visually celebrated autumn experiences in the eastern China countryside.
