Hongcun is the most celebrated of the ancient Huizhou villages scattered across the valleys of Anhui's Huangshan region, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose mirror-like ponds, whitewashed walls, and dark grey tiles have earned it the nickname "the village in a Chinese painting." Laid out in the shape of an ox, with the surrounding hills and the engineered water system shaping its overall form, the village has become the visual archetype of the southern Anhui village and one of the most photographed rural destinations in eastern China.

Two water features anchor the village's visual identity, the broad crescent of the South Lake at its southern edge and the circular Moon Pond at its heart, both of which reflect the surrounding whitewashed facades and serve as the foreground for the classic Hongcun photograph. A network of small channels runs through the village's lanes, fed by the surrounding hills, historically providing water for daily household use and fire protection, and the relationship between the built fabric and the engineered water system is one of the most distinctive features of the site.

Walking through the lanes, visitors pass between courtyard houses decorated with the fine wood, stone, and brick carving for which Huizhou architecture is known, with screens, lintels, and window frames cut with patterns of astonishing delicacy. Several of the larger residences and ancestral halls have been opened to the public, allowing visitors to step inside and appreciate the craftsmanship at close range, and art students set up easels along the pond edges and lanes throughout the year, adding another layer of visual interest to the village scene.

For a Huangshan itinerary, Hongcun is an essential stop that pairs naturally with Mount Huangshan itself, offering a quieter, more human-scaled counterpoint to the grandeur of the peak above. An overnight stay, which allows for the village to be experienced without the day-trip crowds and at the quieter hours around dawn and dusk, is the most rewarding way to visit, and many travelers use Hongcun as a base for exploring the surrounding villages and bamboo groves of the broader region.
