西逓

Xidi is a UNESCO World Heritage village in the Huangshan region of Anhui, a sister site to Hongcun that offers a complementary vision of the traditional Huizhou village, with the emphasis here falling more squarely on the architecture and the craft of the carved decoration than on the engineered water systems that define its better-known neighbor. Set against the foothills of the surrounding mountains, the village's narrow lanes, high white walls, and dark rooflines preserve one of the densest concentrations of surviving Ming and Qing dynasty domestic architecture in the region.

The village is laid out along a single main axis with smaller lanes branching off, and walking through it takes visitors past a sequence of grand courtyard residences built by the Huizhou merchants who once dominated regional trade across the empire. The hallmark of the Xidi houses is the carving, in particular the wood, stone, and brick carvings set into lintels, screens, window frames, and the ornamental gateways that mark the entrances of the more important residences, with patterns drawn from opera scenes, flowers, birds, and abstract motifs rendered at a fineness that suggests lacework rather than masonry.

Several of the largest residences have been turned into small museums or exhibition spaces that interpret the domestic life of the Huizhou merchant elite, while others remain inhabited or used as inns and shops, giving the village a continued lived-in character rather than the open-air museum feel of a purely preserved site. Art students from across China gather here to paint, and the sight of easels set up in the lanes is one of the recurring visual signatures of a visit.

For a Huangshan itinerary, Xidi is best visited in combination with Hongcun, since the two villages together give a fuller picture of the Huizhou architectural and merchant tradition than either can in isolation, and the short journey between them makes a combined visit easy within a single day. It rewards a slower pace, particularly for visitors with an interest in traditional Chinese architecture, decorative carving, or the historical trade networks of the Huizhou merchants.
