Mont enneigé de Shika

Shika Snow Mountain sits immediately to the west of Shangri-La's old town, and although its summit is just over 4,400 meters, modest by Tibetan plateau standards, the peak is one of the few in the area with a cable car running directly from the valley floor. The local Tibetan name carries the sense of "sacred mountain with a toad-shaped boulder," and the upper ridge is studded with small shrines and prayer-flag lines that mark its status as a local pilgrimage site.

The cable car ascent rises through belts of spruce forest, subalpine meadow, and open scree, opening out at the summit to a panoramic view that, on a clear day, takes in the main peaks of the Hengduan ranges, including Jade Dragon, Haba, Meili, and the Baima massif, arranged along the horizon. Because Shika itself sits slightly apart from the higher massifs, the summit is one of the most reliable viewpoints for a single-day trip out of Shangri-La.

The meadows at the mid-station are grazed by yaks in summer, and a short network of walking trails leads across to a small alpine lake. Wildflowers are at their peak between June and August, when the ground is carpeted with gentians, pedicularis, and several species of blue poppy. Black-necked cranes and lammergeiers are occasionally sighted from the upper trails in migration season.

For travelers with limited time in Shangri-La, Shika offers the most efficient route above the treeline. Half a day is enough for a round trip by cable car; a full day allows time for a ridge walk and a long break at the summit pavilion. The wind at the top can be sharp even in midsummer, so an extra layer and sun protection are essential, and the cable car occasionally suspends service in high wind.
