Site du monastère de Sumtseling

The Songzanlin Scenic Area wraps around Ganden Sumtseling Monastery on the northern outskirts of Shangri-La, combining the most important Tibetan Buddhist complex in southern China with a landscape of lakes, meadows, and Tibetan villages. Approached along a ceremonial causeway that crosses a small lake known as Shikha, the complex rises up a hillside in terraces of white and crimson walls topped with gilded roofs, a silhouette widely compared to the Potala Palace in Lhasa.

Founded in 1679 under the Fifth Dalai Lama, Sumtseling grew into the principal Gelug-pa (Yellow Hat) monastery of the Yunnan-Sichuan frontier, at its peak housing several thousand monks. Today the working monastery and the surrounding cultural park are managed together, with a clear walking route that links the main assembly halls, the two colleges, the residences of the senior lamas, and a circuit of smaller chapels.

The scenic area extends beyond the monastic enclosure. Wooden boardwalks lead down to the wetlands along the lake and out to nearby Tibetan hamlets, where whitewashed farmhouses sit among barley fields and prayer flags. Tibetan families living on the site continue seasonal rhythms of herding and farming, and small tea houses along the route serve butter tea and tsampa to travelers.

For international visitors, the Songzanlin area is one of the most accessible windows onto living Tibetan Buddhist culture in southwest China. Mornings are quieter and best for photography, while ceremonial afternoons during major Tibetan festivals draw pilgrims from across the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. A visit typically takes a half day on foot and combines naturally with the old town of Shangri-La and the lake district at Potatso.
