Lac Napa (prairie d'Yila)

Napa Lake (also called Yila Grassland) sits in a shallow basin a few kilometers northwest of Shangri-La's old town and is the most accessible of the high-altitude wetlands around the city. The site is technically a seasonal karst lake: fed by summer monsoon rains and snowmelt, it expands into a broad sheet of open water between roughly June and September, then drains through underground fissures to reveal an extensive grassland for the rest of the year.

This shifting mosaic of lake, marsh, and meadow supports a rich bird community. Black-necked cranes, bar-headed geese, and ruddy shelducks gather here in large numbers during the spring and autumn migrations, and Napa Hai has been designated a wetland of international importance. The shallows are also one of the easiest places in Yunnan to watch the interaction between wildlife and traditional herding, as Tibetan families continue to graze yaks and horses on the surrounding pasture.

A graded road loops around the basin, and most visitors explore by car or bicycle, stopping at roadside viewpoints and small Tibetan-style cafes. Horseback rides along the lakeshore are offered by local families, and boardwalk sections extend out into the marsh at the most scenic corners. Cycling the full circuit takes a half day on a rented bike and makes a satisfying counterpoint to the more strenuous trekking options around Shangri-La.

For photographers and birders, the strongest seasons are late autumn, when the water is low and the golden grass contrasts with the snow peaks ringing the basin, and the spring crane migration. Warm layers and sun protection are essential: the lake sits at roughly 3,270 meters above sea level, and the weather can shift quickly between sun, wind, and brief afternoon showers.
