About Changyu Wine Culture Museum
The Changyu Wine Culture Museum is a museum and historic winery complex in the center of downtown Yantai, dedicated to the history of the Changyu Wine Company, China's oldest modern winery. Founded in 1892 by the overseas Chinese businessman Zhang Bishi, Changyu helped introduce European-style viticulture and winemaking to China, and it went on to win international awards in the early twentieth century. The Changyu Wine Culture Museum stands in central Yantai on the original site of the Changyu Wine Company, built in 1992 to mark the firm's centenary. It recreates the century-old company gatehouse; above ground, the exhibits trace how Zhang Bishi founded China's first winery in 1892 and the international prizes that followed, while below lies a cellar several metres deep, kept at a constant temperature and humidity and still lined with oak barrels, a living fossil of a century of Chinese wine-making. The site is listed as one of the first batch of National Industrial Heritage by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, ranked first.
Visiting: Stepping into the underground cellar, the brick-vaulted aisles run deep and cool, with rows of oak barrels ageing in silence as if one had stepped back into Yantai a century ago; in the halls Sun Yat-sen's original "Pinning in quality, sweet as a spring" inscription, the world's-fair medals and old wine labels string together the story of Chinese wine reaching the world.
