張掖大仏寺について
The Zhangye Giant Buddha Temple is one of the most important historic religious sites in the Hexi Corridor and the single best-known cultural attraction in the city of Zhangye itself. Founded during the Western Xia dynasty more than nine hundred years ago, the temple complex has long been a landmark on this stretch of the ancient Silk Road, and it remains an active place of worship as well as a major draw for visitors interested in the Buddhist heritage of northwest China.
The centerpiece of the complex is the great reclining Buddha housed inside the main hall, a colossal clay statue of the Buddha entering parinirvana that is among the largest of its kind in China. The figure stretches for more than thirty meters from head to foot, with a single finger large enough for an adult to lie along, and it is flanked by smaller sculptures of disciples and deities arranged along the hall. The interior walls retain sections of historical mural, including scenes drawn from the broader corpus of Chinese Buddhist legend, giving the hall value both as a devotional space and as an archive of religious art.
Beyond the main hall, the complex includes several other historical structures, among them exhibition halls displaying Buddhist sculpture, copied cave art, and religious texts, including portions of a famous set of imperial-gifted scriptures that have long been regarded as one of the temple's treasures. A Tibetan-style stupa and a former Shanxi guild hall sit within the same compound, layering later cultural and architectural influences onto the original Western Xia core.
For a Zhangye itinerary, the Giant Buddha Temple is an essential stop, offering direct contact with the city's Silk Road and Buddhist past in a single walkable complex. A relaxed visit typically takes a couple of hours, and the central location makes it easy to combine with other stops around the older districts of Zhangye.
文化遺産
Zhangye Giant Buddha Temple was founded in 1098, the first year of the Yong'an reign of the Western Xia, originally called Kasyapa Tathagata Temple and built by imperial decree of the Xia emperor Qianshun; it was renamed Baojue Temple in 1411 and Hongren Temple in 1678, and is popularly called the Great Buddha Temple for the immense reclining Buddha of the nirvana Sakyamuni enshrined within. The Buddha hall stretches across nine bays, its painted clay figures largely surviving Xia work, and the reclining Buddha—34.5 metres long, 7.5 metres across the shoulders—is the largest indoor wood-core clay reclining Buddha in China. The temple also keeps over six thousand volumes of imperially bestowed sutras from the Ming Yingzong reign, some written in pure gold, and in 1996 was designated a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.
見学案内: Entering from the temple square, visitors pass through the Great Buddha Hall, Wansheng Hall, Sutra Hall, the earthen pagoda and the Shanxi Guild Hall. In the Great Buddha Hall the reclining Buddha lies serene and solemn—a finger long enough to lie a person on, an ear wide enough to seat ten abreast—while the Ten Disciples, Eighteen Arhats and the murals of the Classic of Mountains and Seas and the Journey to the West are especially fine. Wansheng and Sutra halls now display Buddhist art and scriptures, offering the imperially bestowed sutras and images of successive dynasties and the weighty spirit of a Western Xia royal temple and Silk Road Buddhism.
