西柵について
The West Scenic Zone is the larger and more refined of Wuzhen's two main scenic areas and is widely considered the visual heart of the water town. Unlike the more lived-in East Zone, the West Zone was comprehensively restored and redesigned as a unified experience, with a deliberate blend of preserved historic architecture and newer buildings fitted into the same Jiangnan style, the result being a more curated, atmospheric take on the classic canal-town landscape.
Walking the zone, visitors move along stone-paved lanes and canal-side paths past white-walled, black-tiled houses, workshops, and small hotels, with stone arch bridges crossing the water at regular intervals. The atmosphere here is calmer and more self-consciously scenic than the East Zone's, with fewer year-round residents and a more curated selection of cafes, bars, teahouses, and small museums occupying the restored buildings. Wooden rowboats drift along the main canal throughout the day, and the overall effect is closer to a slow, contemplative walk through a designed landscape than through a working town.
The zone's design intentionally rewards lingering. Many of the buildings house boutique guesthouses, restaurants, and small performance spaces rather than the souvenir stalls that dominate some other water towns, and the layout encourages visitors to stay into the evening rather than pass through on a day trip. Workshops demonstrate traditional indigo cloth dyeing, wine-making, woodblock printing, and other local crafts, giving the zone a quietly cultural identity alongside its scenic appeal.
The West Scenic Zone is most famous, however, for its nighttime illuminations, which transform the lanes, bridges, and canal-side facades into one of the most photographed nighttime scenes in the Yangtze delta. The carefully designed lighting scheme traces the rooflines, bridges, and water's edge with warm lantern light, and the reflections on the canal give the whole zone a soft, lantern-lit atmosphere that draws most overnight visitors out for a long evening stroll. Because of this, the West Zone is best experienced as an overnight stay rather than a day visit, with a relaxed day walk followed by an unhurried evening along the lit-up canals.
文化遺産
The West Scenic Zone is the essence of Wuzhen; though a main scenic area like the East Zone, it lacks the latter's busy market air, having been wholly restored and redesigned, with cafés and bars lending a literary mood to its lanes. Here gather the town's most representative shuige dwellings and old bridges, seven islets linked by dozens of ancient spans—the finest area for viewing the shuige, a provincial heritage building form—and it is the permanent home of the World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit.
見学案内: By day one wanders the West Zone across the Tongji and Renji bridges, watching shuige households open their windows to the river; at night a sculling boat carries one along the West Market River as lanterns light up in turn on both banks, their reflections crisp and bright on the water—the water town at its most beguiling in lantern light and oar-sound, a Wuzhen night no visitor misses.
