平遥古城

The Ancient City of Pingyao is one of the best-preserved walled cities in China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in Shanxi province roughly midway between Beijing and Xi'an. The city is enclosed by a massive rectangular wall dating from the early Ming dynasty, studded with watchtowers and gates, and a walk along its ramparts gives a sweeping view over the sea of grey tiled roofs within. Inside, the chief sights include the old county government office, the Confucian temple, the City God Temple, the Taoist Qingxu Temple, the Rishengchang and Xietongqing draft banks, and the lively Ming-Qing shopping street, all set along a strict north-south central axis. Because Pingyao is best experienced slowly, plan to stay at least one full day inside the walls, ideally with an overnight in a converted courtyard inn so you can enjoy the empty streets after dark and the early morning light. The city is at its most atmospheric at sunrise and after sunset, when the lanterns are lit and the day-trip crowds thin out. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather, with crisp air and golden light on the old walls.
