馬家大院（平遥古城）

Ma's Grand Courtyard is one of the best-preserved traditional courtyard residences inside the Ancient City of Pingyao, offering a quieter, more intimate look at domestic architecture than the city's larger museums. Built in a classic northern Chinese style, the courtyard was once the home of a wealthy local family, and it survives in good condition today. For travelers who want to see how Pingyao's prosperous residents actually lived, it is a rewarding stop.

The complex follows the classic courtyard layout of northern China, with three successive courtyards arranged along a north-south axis, each contained within grey-tiled, hard-ridge roofed buildings. The main hall of each courtyard faces three bays across the front, with matching wings of three bays on either side, creating a tight, symmetrical, and harmonious composition. The scale is more modest than the great courtyard palaces of Shanxi's most famous merchant families, but the proportions and craftsmanship are still impressive, and the layout allows you to read clearly the hierarchy of spaces within a prosperous Pingyao household.

Walking through the successive courtyards, you get a vivid sense of how space was organized in a traditional family compound, with the most formal reception halls near the entrance, more private family quarters toward the rear, and servants' and storage areas tucked into the wings. The carved door frames, screen walls, and painted beams that survive in several of the halls give a sense of the craftsmanship that went into even a relatively modest Pingyao residence. Displays inside some of the rooms explain the daily life, family structure, and domestic rituals of the city's merchant and gentry classes.

Ma's Grand Courtyard is located within the Ancient City, and because it is less visited than the headline museums it offers a calmer, more contemplative experience. Allow about an hour to walk through the three courtyards and read the exhibits. It pairs naturally with a stroll along the nearby Ming-Qing shopping street and the Rishengchang draft bank, both of which are within easy walking distance.
