閲江楼

Yuejiang Tower, the "River-Viewing Tower," crowns the summit of Lion Mountain on the southern bank of the Yangtze in northwestern Nanjing, and it ranks among the most prominent landmarks along the city's riverfront. Although the tower is styled after Ming-dynasty pavilion architecture, it is in fact a modern construction, completed at the turn of the twenty-first century to realize a project first envisioned by the founding Ming emperor more than six hundred years earlier. The original plan was never carried through, leaving an enduring gap in the city's historic skyline that the current building was designed to fill.

The tower rises in several tapering stories of red-painted columns and gleaming yellow glazed tile, with upturned eaves and a panoramic upper gallery whose elevated position above the Yangtze floodplain makes it one of the best single viewpoints in Nanjing. From the top, the Yangtze stretches westward in a broad, muddy expanse crossed by the long bridges that tie the north bank to the city, while the old ramparts of the Ming city wall curl around the base of the hill and the modern towers of the riverside districts rise to the south. The interior displays are devoted to the history of the site, the Ming-dynasty origins of the tower project, and the broader story of Nanjing's relationship with the great river, which has shaped the city's fortunes from its earliest history.

For foreign visitors, Yuejiang Tower is best treated as a viewpoint and a complement to the older Ming-dynasty sights elsewhere in the city, rather than as a primary historic monument. Its modern construction sets it apart from genuinely ancient landmarks like the Ming city wall or the Ming Xiaoling mausoleum, but the panoramic view of the Yangtze, the bridges, and the old wall makes the climb worthwhile on its own. A visit fills an hour or two and is particularly rewarding in the late afternoon, when the low sun lights up the river and the western facade of the tower. The surrounding Zhengyangmen gate and restored wall stretch combine naturally with the tower into a focused half-day in the northwestern heritage zone, an area that many first-time visitors to Nanjing overlook but which holds some of the most dramatic single views in the city.
