The Presidential Palace is a sprawling complex of buildings and gardens in central Nanjing that served as the seat of Chinese central government across several successive regimes, from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in the mid-nineteenth century through the Republic of China period, when it housed the offices of the president and the Nationalist government. Today it is preserved as a museum of China's modern history and is one of the most historically significant single sites in the city, sitting a short walk from the Nanjing Museum of Modern History district and within easy reach of the old Xinjiekou commercial core.

The compound is unusual in that it layers several distinct historical periods on top of one another. Western-style administrative buildings from the early twentieth century, where the republican government conducted its business, stand alongside earlier Chinese-style halls and a classical garden, Xuyuan, whose origins reach back to the Ming era and whose pavilions, rockeries, and pond create one of the most pleasant green spaces in central Nanjing. It provides the political context that makes sense of the city's republican-era architecture and its role as the capital of the Republic of China, and the layered architecture makes it visually rewarding as well as historically dense. A visit typically fills half a day, especially if time is taken in the Xuyuan garden and in the republic-period exhibition halls. Because the site sits in the heart of central Nanjing, it pairs naturally with the adjacent Museum of the Six Dynasties, the 1912 entertainment district, and the shopping area around Xinjiekou, so it functions as the anchor of a rewarding walking itinerary through the modern downtown.
