夫子廟について
The Confucius Temple of Nanjing, sitting on the northern bank of the Qinhuai River in the city's old southern district, is both a working temple complex and the anchor of one of the most visited historic neighborhoods in the city. First established during the Song dynasty, the temple was originally built to honor Confucius and served as a center of scholarly life tied to the adjacent imperial examination compound, and over the centuries it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Today it ranks alongside the Confucius temples of Beijing, Qufu, and Jilin as one of the four major Confucian temples of China.
The temple complex centers on a main hall housing a statue of Confucius, flanked by side chambers whose displays trace the history of Confucian learning, the imperial examination system, and the role the temple played in the cultural life of old Nanjing. The architecture, in the restored late-imperial southern style with upturned eaves and carved wood detailing, frames a sequence of courtyards that open out toward the river, so that the temple reads as continuous with the surrounding lanes and waterfront rather than sealed off from them. The atmosphere is shaped as much by the surrounding commercial district — food stalls, lantern shops, and restored traditional architecture — as by the religious buildings themselves.
For foreign visitors, the temple is best treated as the focal point of a broader exploration of the Qinhuai River district, rather than as a standalone monument. The temple itself fills roughly an hour, but the surrounding lanes, the riverside promenade, and the nearby imperial examination museum together make for a full afternoon or evening, particularly when the lanterns are lit after dark and the neighborhood takes on its most photogenic character. The Confucius Temple area has been a center of Nanjing's literary and commercial life for centuries, and even in its current, tourism-oriented form, that layered history is still visible to visitors who slow down enough to read the inscriptions and look past the shopfronts. It is the most rewarding single neighborhood in Nanjing for an unhurried evening walk.

First built in 1034 in the Northern Song on the site of an Eastern Jin academy, Nanjing's Confucius Temple sets a temple before and a school behind along a Confucian axis, with the Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall and Mingde Hall. Ranked among China's four great Confucian temples, it was the city's educational centre from the Six Dynasties through the Qing, and the adjacent Jiangnan Examination Hall made it a hub of the imperial exams. The Qinhuai River serves as its ritual pool, with Ming-era stone railings and screen wall still standing.
見学案内: Beyond the gates rise a bronze Confucius over four metres tall and statues of twelve sages, while the great hall holds a vast portrait of Confucius and stone-inlaid murals of his life. After dark, painted boats glow on the Qinhuai, and from New Year to the Lantern Festival the Qinhuai lanterns light the scene — the surest way to feel the old Jinling of 'mist on cold water, moon on sand'.
