青岩古鎮

Qingyan Ancient Town, located in the Huaxi district south of central Guiyang, is one of the four celebrated ancient towns of Guizhou province and one of the most rewarding day-trip destinations from the provincial capital. Its walled lanes, carved gateways, and dense concentration of old buildings preserve the atmosphere of a military settlement that once guarded the southwestern frontier of the Chinese empire.

The town was founded during the Ming dynasty as a military garrison, and it grew into a fortified post on the routes connecting Guizhou to the wider southwest. Within its walls, a remarkably large number of buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties survive, including temples, ancestral halls, residences, and defensive structures whose stone and timber construction reflects both local building traditions and the practical needs of a frontier stronghold.

Walking the lanes today, visitors encounter a layered architectural record in which Daoist, Buddhist, Confucian, and even Christian influences all left traces, an unusual mix for a town of this size and a reflection of Qingyan's role as a meeting point of cultures and faiths. The town walls and gate towers still define its outline and offer a sense of the original defensive plan.

Qingyan's modern fame widened considerably after it served as a filming location for a well-known Chinese movie, which brought its lanes and courtyards to a larger audience. Local food is also part of the appeal, with regional specialties such as roasted pork trot, preserved tofu, and rice cakes sold from small shops along the main streets.

For visitors to Guiyang, Qingyan Ancient Town offers the most accessible and complete of Guizhou's historic garrison towns, a place where Ming dynasty foundations, religious diversity, and lively street food come together inside walls that still stand much as they did centuries ago.
