花渓夜郎谷

Huaxi Yelang Valley sits in a small gorge at the foot of Doupeng Mountain, in the Huaxi university district on the Guiyang side of the Gui'an new area, and takes its name from one of the most evocative chapters of southwest China's ancient past. The valley faces Doupeng Mountain, which local tradition holds as the former seat of a ruler of the Yelang kingdom, the enigmatic polity whose memory echoes through early Chinese records of the southwest.

The Yelang kingdom was among the larger of the tribal confederations encountered by the expanding Chinese empire in the region that is now Guizhou, and its name survives in a classical Chinese idiom about overestimating one's own importance. What connects the valley most directly to that history is the presence on the mountain's summit of the ruins of an old Yelang fortified settlement, traces of the ancient garrison that give the valley below its name.

Today the valley is known as much for its striking sculptural landscape as for its historical associations. Over many years, a sculptor built the site up as an environmental artwork of towering stone heads, columns, and totem-like figures assembled from local rock, creating a surreal forest of carved faces that fuse ancient Southwest Asian and local themes with a raw, hand-built quality.

The result is a place that operates on two levels at once, as both a meditation on the region's buried Yelang heritage and as a singular work of land art. Walking among the stone figures set against the gorge's green walls, visitors can feel the layers of myth and craft that define the site.
