The Xining TV Tower — also known by its popular name, the "Pearl of the Plateau" — is a 188-meter-tall broadcast, observation, and telecommunications tower on the South Mountain ridge above central Xining. It is one of the most visible structures in the Qinghai capital and functions as both a working transmission facility and a sightseeing attraction.

The tower's silhouette is a classic Asian observation-tower design: a slender shaft carrying a pod near the top, with the pod housing observation decks, dining, and broadcast equipment. From the upper viewing levels, the whole of Xining opens out below — the dense grid of the city center, the Huangshui River corridor running east-west through the valley, the minarets of the city's mosques, and the mountain ridges of the Qilian foothills framing the basin on all sides. On a clear evening the panorama extends for many kilometers, and photographers come up specifically for the blue-hour shots of the city illuminations.

Inside the pod, the rotating restaurant and observation lounge serve standard Chinese mid-tier hotel fare, but the draw is the panorama, not the cuisine. The tower is particularly popular with local families at sunset, when temperatures drop and the city lights begin to come on.

For most independent travelers, the TV Tower is a worthwhile evening stop after a day spent at the city's monasteries, museums, or bazaars. The view it offers is genuinely informative — you can see at a glance why Xining sits where it does, in a defensible basin on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, and why for centuries it has been the major trading hub between central China and the Tibetan and Mongolian lands further west.

The tower is located within the larger South Mountain park area, so it is easy to combine with a hillside walk before going up. Allow 60 to 90 minutes on site.

Practicalities: opening hours, ticketing, and deck access can change from year to year, so confirm locally before visiting. Bring identification, which is sometimes required for entry to tall structures in China, and a warm layer — temperatures at the deck are noticeably colder than at street level. Mandarin is the working language at the entrance.
