Sobre Perla de la Meseta

The "Pearl of the Plateau" is the popular name for the Xining TV Tower, a 188-meter-tall broadcast and observation tower on the ridge of South Mountain above the city of Xining, and one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Qinghai capital. Visible from almost anywhere in the city — particularly at night, when it is lit up in shifting colors — the tower serves both as a working transmission facility for regional television and as a sightseeing and dining destination.

The design is a classic late-20th-century Asian observation tower: a slender concrete shaft carrying a large "flying-saucer" pod near the top, with outdoor and indoor observation decks, a rotating restaurant, and broadcast equipment above. From the viewing levels, the entire Xining basin opens out below — the grid of the city center, the Huangshui River winding eastward, the orchards and mosques of the older districts, and on a clear day the mountain ridges that frame the valley on every side. Sunsets are particularly dramatic from the upper deck, when the basin fills with long shadows and the lights of the city come on.

The tower is particularly popular in the evening, when local families and photographers come up to watch the city illuminate. The rotating restaurant serves standard Chinese hotel-cuisine fare, but the draw is the panorama, not the food. Allow an hour for the deck and a half-hour for transit each way.

For most independent travelers, the Pearl of the Plateau is a worthwhile evening stop after a day of monasteries, museums, or markets — a chance to see the geography of Xining laid out in a single view, and to understand why the city has always been a strategic crossroads on the eastern edge of the plateau. Combine it with a walk in the adjacent South Mountain park.

Practicalities: opening hours, deck access, and ticket procedures can vary, so check locally. Foreign visitors should bring identification, as it is sometimes required for entry to tall structures in China. Mandarin is the working language at the entrance and the restaurant.
