Pishi-Straße

Pishi Street is one of Yangzhou's old commercial lanes, historically known as the city's main street for the leather goods trade. Like Dongguan Street, it preserves a slice of Yangzhou's late-imperial and early-republican commercial fabric, but with a smaller-scale, less tourist-developed character that appeals to visitors looking for a quieter walk through the city's older lanes.

The street's history is tied to the long-running importance of leatherwork in Yangzhou's commercial life. Leather had been a marker of refinement and high-status dress in imperial China, and in a wealthy city like Yangzhou, with its salt-trade-fueled consumer market, the trade in furs and leather goods supported an entire streetscape of specialist shops, workshops, and merchant houses. Pishi Street took shape around that trade, and its name, literally "Leather Market Street," still carries the memory of that specialization even as the actual leather businesses have mostly given way to other uses.

Today, the street's appeal lies more in its texture than in any single attraction. Walking its length, visitors pass a mix of older commercial buildings, traditional courtyard houses, and small shops that have taken over the ground floors of what were once workshops or merchant premises. Compared with Dongguan Street, which has been more fully developed as a tourist-oriented old street, Pishi Street retains a more lived-in, slightly faded character, and for some visitors that is precisely what makes it worth visiting: it offers a glimpse of the city's older commercial fabric without the level of restoration and tourism infrastructure that characterizes Yangzhou's headline old street.

In recent years, the street has also attracted a small number of cafes, design studios, and independent shops, giving it the beginnings of a creative-quarter atmosphere alongside its older commercial layer. This has made it particularly popular with younger local visitors and with travelers looking for slower-paced, less conventional alternatives to Yangzhou's main sightseeing circuit.

A typical visit takes around forty-five minutes to an hour as part of a wider walk, since Pishi Street is best treated as one thread in a broader wandering route through Yangzhou's old lanes rather than a destination in its own right. The street sits within easy walking distance of the Dongguan Street historic district, and many visitors fold the two together into a single relaxed afternoon of old-city strolling, sampling snacks, browsing small shops, and taking in the layers of Yangzhou's commercial past at an unhurried pace.
