Yucheng-Poststation

The Yucheng Posthouse, located in Gaoyou on the northern edge of the wider Yangzhou municipal area, is one of the best-preserved ancient postal relay stations still standing in China and a rare surviving physical witness to the imperial mail and transport system that once linked the empire together. Rated as a national 4A tourist attraction, it stands as a reminder of how communications, governance, and travel worked in imperial China, before telegraphs, railways, or modern roads.

The site's history reaches back more than two thousand years. Historical records trace the establishment of a postal relay here to the third century BCE, when the Qin state set up a relay station on a raised platform and gave the surrounding settlement its name, Gaoyou, which literally ties the city's identity to the mail relay system. Of all the thousands of cities and counties in China, Gaoyou is unusual in carrying that postal heritage in its own name, and the modern posthouse site is in many ways a monument to that inheritance.

The surviving structures visible today are from the Ming and Qing periods, when the posthouse was rebuilt and maintained as part of the imperial relay network along the Grand Canal route. The complex includes the main relay buildings, stables, residential quarters for the staff who ran the station, and shrines and administrative rooms tied to its official function. Walking through the compound gives a concrete sense of how a relay station was organized, with horses, riders, messengers, and officials all operating within a single walled compound alongside the water route they served.

A typical visit takes around an hour to an hour and a half, and the relatively compact size of the site makes it possible to read most of the interpretive displays without rushing. Because Gaoyou sits at some distance from Yangzhou's central sightseeing cluster, the posthouse draws fewer international visitors than the city's headline attractions, and even on weekends it tends to be quiet.

For visitors with an interest in Chinese imperial institutions, transport history, or the practical workings of the Grand Canal corridor, the Yucheng Posthouse is one of the more distinctive stops in the Yangzhou area, and it is best treated as a dedicated half-day trip from the city center rather than a quick add-on to a standard Yangzhou itinerary.
