Kaiserkanal Sanwan Landschaftsgebiet

The Canal Sanwan Scenic Area is a contemporary urban park along Yangzhou's stretch of the ancient Grand Canal, built around a distinctive double bend in the waterway just south of the city center. Developed as part of Yangzhou's broader effort to open up its canal frontage as public space, the park combines restored wetland ecology with waterfront promenades, landscaping, and cultural references drawn from the canal's long history, making it one of the most pleasant places in the city for an unhurried outdoor walk.

The park's most defining feature is the shape of the canal itself. Where the Grand Canal passes through this section, it was deliberately bent into a slow S-curve in the Ming dynasty to calm the water flow, producing the "three bends" that give the area its name. Today, walking paths, footbridges, and viewing platforms are laid out to follow that curve, with the park's main structures positioned to give different perspectives on the water at different points along the route. The landscaping along the banks leans heavily on native wetland plants, and the result is closer to a designed nature reserve than a formal urban park, with reed beds, willows, and open water attracting bird life throughout the year.

Beyond the outdoor scenery, the Sanwan area has taken on greater cultural weight with the opening of the Yangzhou China Grand Canal Museum on its western edge, which has turned the wider Sanwan district into something closer to a canal-themed cultural quarter rather than a purely scenic park. The combination of the museum's exhibitions on Grand Canal history and the park's preserved stretch of the canal itself makes it possible to understand both the story of the waterway and its physical presence in a single visit.

A relaxed walk through the park typically takes about an hour and a half, and the flat paths make it an easy outing for visitors of most fitness levels. Early morning and late afternoon are the most popular windows, especially in warmer months when the midday heat can be intense, and the park is noticeably quieter than the historic center around Slender West Lake.

Because it sits within a short distance of the Grand Canal Museum, most visitors treat the Canal Sanwan Scenic Area and the museum as a single combined half-day visit rather than two separate stops.
