The Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics Memorial Hall is a small museum dedicated to one of the most distinctive movements in Chinese painting and calligraphy, a group of eighteenth-century artists active in Yangzhou who became known collectively as the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou." Located just southeast of Slender West Lake, the museum is housed in the converted Western Temple, the former residence of Jin Nong, one of the eight, and its setting gives it a quieter, more contemplative character than the city's larger attractions.

The Eight Eccentrics were a loosely affiliated group of Qing-dynasty painters and calligraphers who settled in Yangzhou during its eighteenth-century commercial peak, when the salt trade had turned the city into one of the wealthiest and most culturally vibrant places in China. Their work pushed back against the highly polished, rule-bound academic painting of the imperial court in favor of bolder brushwork, unconventional compositions, and subjects drawn from everyday life, plants, and the natural world. The names most associated with the group, including Zheng Banqiao, Jin Nong, and Huang Shen, are still counted among the most original Chinese artists of their era, and their influence on later ink painting was considerable.

The museum's exhibitions introduce visitors to the lives and works of these artists through a combination of original paintings, calligraphy, reproduced works, and biographical displays. The collection is not enormous, but it is well focused, and the layout of the converted temple, with its courtyards and quiet halls, suits the contemplative nature of the subject matter.
