Aydingkol Lake

Aydingkol Lake (Aydingkol Hu, Aiding Hu) is a salt lake at the lowest point of the Turpan Basin in Xinjiang, and at roughly 150 meters below sea level it ranks among the lowest land surfaces on Earth. The lake sits in the deepest part of the Turpan depression, a fault trough south of the city of Turpan, and its shoreline and surrounding salt flats have become one of the most distinctive natural landmarks in the region.

The lake is endorheic, meaning it has no outlet, and the water that reaches it arrives mainly as snowmelt runoff from the Flaming Mountains and the Tian Shan, supplemented by groundwater rising from the basin floor. Over the past century its open-water area has contracted sharply as irrigation expanded across the oasis, and in many years the lake is more accurately described as a wet salt pan than a body of water. Crystallized salt forms thick white crusts across the lake bed, and the mineral deposits that surround it give the landscape an otherworldly character.

The scenic area developed at the lake's edge provides basic visitor infrastructure, including a parking area, a small shelter, and a marker indicating the elevation below sea level, which is the most photographed feature on the site. A short walking route leads out onto the salt flat, where the dry ground crunches underfoot and the horizon shimmers with mirage effects in the warmer months. The wind across the basin floor is often strong, and the open exposure means summer visits are best made at the margins of the day.

For international travelers, the main interest of Aydingkol is geological and geographic. The site offers a tangible sense of the Turpan Basin as a structural depression, and it complements the regional picture built up at the Turpan Museum, where the basin's formation is explained in more depth. The contrast between the salt flat and the green vineyards a short drive to the north is one of the strongest visual illustrations of the oasis principle in Xinjiang.

A visit to Aydingkol is short, usually under an hour. It is typically paired with one of the karez parks or with a sunset stop after a day visiting the eastern ruins, and it lies along the wider Turpan circuit that also includes Jiaohe, the Flaming Mountains, and Grape Valley.
