Karez Paradise

Karez Park (Kanerjing Leyuan) is one of several sites around Turpan, Xinjiang, that preserve and interpret the traditional underground irrigation system known as the karez. Located a short drive from the city center, this 4A-rated scenic area centers on a functioning karez line, complete with its vertical shafts, underground channel (or "dark gallery"), surface channel, and small reservoir, the four components that together carry snowmelt from the Tian Shan foothills to the oasis fields by gravity alone.

The interpretation focuses on how a karez was built and maintained. Visitors enter through a visitor center and walk out across the open ground, where rows of low circular earth mounds mark the tops of the vertical shafts sunk at regular intervals by hereditary karez diggers. From there, a staircase descends into the underground channel itself, a hand-cut tunnel roughly shoulder-width, where the temperature drops sharply and snowmelt runs continuously along a stone bed.

Above ground, the park reconstructs aspects of traditional Turpan rural life. Walled courtyards, shaded grape trellises, displays of agricultural tools, and a small hall of regional folk culture place the engineering in its social context. Brief music and dance performances are scheduled in peak season, and stalls sell raisins, dried fruit, and melons from the very fields the karez irrigates.

The site is one of two main visitor karez presentations in the Turpan area, the other being the Karez Folk Park closer to the city. Both cover the same underlying system, but Karez Park is the larger property and tends to be the stop included on standard group circuits of the basin. For independent travelers with limited time, one of the two is enough; those with a deeper interest in vernacular oasis culture may visit both, since each emphasizes slightly different aspects of the same engineering tradition.

A visit typically takes about an hour. The underground section is the highlight and provides welcome relief from summer heat, which is why many Turpan itineraries schedule a karez site in the middle of the day, between open-air ruins like Jiaohe or Gaochang. English signage is limited but improving, and a bilingual guide can be arranged through the ticket office with advance notice.
