Qingyin Pavilion

Qingyin Pavilion is one of the most beloved temples on Mount Emei and the centerpiece of a landscape known since the classical era as Twin Bridges Clear Sound, counted among the traditional scenic highlights of the mountain. The temple was first established in the Tang dynasty by the monk Huitong and is dedicated to Shakyamuni together with the bodhisattvas Manjushri and Samantabhadra, the three figures most closely associated with the sacred peaks of Chinese Buddhism.

The setting is what makes Qingyin Pavilion memorable. The temple sits at the junction of two mountain streams, and a pair of stone arches leaps across the clear water just below the hall, giving the site its name. The constant murmur of water over stone, the dense canopy overhead, and the mirrored surface of the pools together create one of the most photographed scenes on Emei. Visitors often pause here for longer than planned, drawn by the cool air and the sound that gives the pavilion its reputation.

Inside, the halls are modest in scale but richly decorated, reflecting the long devotional life of a working monastery rather than a museum. Qingyin Pavilion also serves as a natural junction on the mountain's network of trails, linking the lower foothill temples with the middle slopes and the longer routes toward Wannian Temple and the upper ridges. Many hikers plan their day so that the pavilion becomes a mid-morning rest point.

Because the temple sits in a narrow valley, it stays cooler and greener than the exposed upper mountain, making it a pleasant stop even on the hot summer days that can make the Emei foothills uncomfortable.
