Golden Peak Cable Car

The Golden Summit Cableway is the principal lift carrying visitors up the upper slopes of Mount Emei toward the Golden Summit, the high ridge that crowns this UNESCO World Heritage mountain. For most travelers, the cableway is the practical link between the upper roadhead at Leidongping and the summit temples, replacing what would otherwise be a long and strenuous hike through the cold, damp forest of the upper mountain.

The ride climbs through a band of dense conifer and rhododendron forest that marks the transition into the alpine zone, and the vegetation closes in on either side of the cabin before opening out onto the exposed ridge above. Rather than treating the mountain as a two-day hiking project, most visitors combine a bus ride to the upper trailhead, the cableway to the summit, and a walk back down through the middle-slope temples on the return. This allows a single day to cover both the Golden Summit, with its famous sea of clouds, and the historic sanctuaries lower down the mountain.

During peak seasons the lift draws long queues, and on days when the summit is wrapped in thick fog many travelers still make the ascent in the hope that the cloud layer will break.
