Liling Ceramic Museum

The Liling Ceramic Museum is located in Liling, a city elsewhere in Hunan province known historically as a center of Chinese porcelain and ceramic production, and it stands somewhat apart geographically from Fenghuang's riverside old town. For travelers building a broader Hunan itinerary that includes Fenghuang, the museum represents a different side of the province's heritage: an industrial and artistic craft tradition rather than Miao and Tujia riverside culture.

Opened in the mid-2010s and substantially renovated in the early 2020s, the museum occupies a large purpose-built exhibition space and displays several thousand pieces of ceramics alongside related bronze ware, silver objects, and paintings, supplemented by specimens, texts, images, and models that explain the craft's historical development. Multimedia displays, including projection and touchscreen elements, are used throughout to walk visitors through Liling's ceramic history, from the porcelain traditions that flourished before the founding of the People's Republic of China, through the development of the region's distinctive underglaze five-color porcelain technique and modern industrial ceramics, to a dedicated gallery honoring a locally celebrated contemporary artist's work in painting and calligraphy.

Because Liling sits a considerable distance from Fenghuang, the museum is best treated as a separate stop for travelers extending their Hunan trip beyond the Xiangxi region, rather than a same-day add-on to a Fenghuang visit. Visitors with an interest in Chinese decorative arts and ceramic history, in particular, may find it worth the detour, since Liling's porcelain tradition is one of the more significant, if lesser-known outside China, chapters in the country's ceramic heritage. Allow a couple of hours to see the main galleries at an unhurried pace.
