Mount Nanhua Phoenix Cultural Scenic Area

Mount Nanhua Phoenix Cultural Scenic Area occupies high ground west of Fenghuang's rainbow bridge, within the Mount Nanhua National Forest Park, and is rated a 4A attraction. Built around the phoenix imagery that gives the town its name, the site combines elevated forest scenery with a cluster of newer, purpose-built cultural structures themed around the mythical bird.

From the higher points within the scenic area, visitors get sweeping views down over Fenghuang Ancient Town and the Tuo River winding through it, a perspective quite different from the street-level views available in the old town itself. The site itself includes more than twenty constructed features developed around the phoenix theme, among them a bridge said to welcome phoenixes, a long stepped approach, a phoenix-dedicated hall, a large sculptural phoenix, a row of totem pillars representing different aspects of phoenix symbolism, a small museum devoted to the bird's cultural significance, a platform associated with the practice of releasing captive animals, and a scenic walking path. Because the area is built into the forested hillside, the walk between features also serves as a pleasant nature walk, shaded and relatively cool compared with the streets below.

Reaching the scenic area typically means climbing from the old town or taking a shuttle partway up, so a visit works well as a half-day outing that combines exercise, cultural theming, and panoramic photography of Fenghuang from above. Many visitors time their climb for later in the afternoon so they can watch the light change over the old town and river before heading back down for dinner. For anyone who wants to see Fenghuang's layout as a whole rather than just its street-level details, this scenic area is one of the more reliable vantage points in the area.
