The Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture Museum, located in Yining, is the principal regional museum for the upper Ili River Valley. Its permanent galleries trace the long, layered history of this northwestern frontier, from prehistoric petroglyphs and Silk Road artifacts to the nomadic cultures of the steppe and the multi-ethnic communities that define modern Yining.

A highlight for many visitors is the collection of silk textiles, lacquerware, and coins recovered along the northern spur of the Silk Road, which passed through the Ili basin and linked the oases of the Tarim to the grasslands of Central Asia. These objects underline how Yining sat at a crossroads of trade, religion, and craftsmanship for more than two millennia.
