Beyond the garden and temple, the surrounding streets form a dense bazaar of traditional-style buildings housing shops, teahouses, and food stalls, and it's here that visitors get one of the best tastes of authentic Shanghai street food and Benbang cuisine, the city's own regional cooking style. Because Yu Garden, the City God Temple, and the surrounding market lanes all sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, the whole area works well as a single half-day stop, and its central location makes it easy to combine with nearby sights such as The Bund or a Huangpu River cruise from Shiliupu Wharf, rounding out a day that moves from old Shanghai's temples and gardens to its modern riverside skyline.
