For most first-time visitors to Shanghai, this district is considered close to essential, offering the most concentrated dose of traditional architecture, local customs, and old-town atmosphere found anywhere in the city center.

Beyond the garden and temple, the surrounding streets form a dense bazaar of traditional-style buildings housing shops, teahouses, and food stalls, and it's here that visitors get one of the best tastes of authentic Shanghai street food and Benbang cuisine, the city's own regional cooking style. Daytime visits tend to be calmer and better for appreciating the architectural details and temple itself, while evenings bring bigger crowds along with the more festive lighting, so visitors chasing a particular kind of atmosphere should plan the time of day accordingly. Weekends and holidays are considerably busier than weekdays throughout the district.

Because Yu Garden, the City God Temple, and the surrounding market lanes all sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, the whole area works well as a single half-day stop, and its central location makes it easy to combine with nearby sights such as The Bund or a Huangpu River cruise from Shiliupu Wharf, rounding out a day that moves from old Shanghai's temples and gardens to its modern riverside skyline.
