The Nanjing City Wall is the great surviving fortification built in the late fourteenth century under the Hongwu Emperor, the founding ruler of the Ming dynasty, who made Nanjing the capital of his new regime and enclosed it within one of the longest city walls ever constructed in China. Substantial sections of the wall still stand today, making it one of the most important and most visible examples of Ming military engineering anywhere in the country, and the restored ramparts have become integral to the modern city's landscape rather than a peripheral ruin.

The wall was laid out in an irregular outline that followed the contours of the city's hills, lakes, and river, rather than the strict rectangle favored in earlier Chinese capital cities, and its perimeter ran for many kilometers around the Ming capital. Several of the original gates survive in restored form, most notably the massive Zhonghua Gate in the south, a complex of fortified courtyards and vaulted brick chambers designed to trap any enemy who breached the outer archway. Long stretches of the wall itself are walkable, particularly the section overlooking Xuanwu Lake in the north and the stretch near Jiming Temple, where the ramparts have been turned into an elevated promenade with views across both the old city and the lake below.

For foreign visitors, the wall is best understood not as a single monument but as a continuous presence woven through the modern city, and the most rewarding way to experience it is to walk a restored section rather than to try to see the entire perimeter. The Xuanwu Lake stretch is the most popular and the easiest to combine with adjacent sights, since it sits within walking distance of Jiming Temple, the lake park, and the Nanjing Museum. Walking the wall at sunset, when the brick ramparts catch the low light and the modern skyline of Nanjing rises beyond the trees, gives a vivid sense of the layered history of the city — the Ming foundation on which the contemporary capital was built. A visit typically fills an hour or two and is best done in comfortable shoes and with water on hot days, since the top of the wall is fully exposed to the sun.
