Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum is the great republican-era memorial at the heart of the Purple Mountain scenic area east of central Nanjing, built to honor the founding figure of the Republic of China and considered one of the most important monuments of modern China. Construction began in the 1920s, shortly after Sun's death, on a site the leader himself had reportedly expressed a wish to be buried on, and the mausoleum was completed in the early 1930s as a vast terraced complex that climbs the southern slope of Purple Mountain in a single, monumental axis.

The approach is by way of a long ceremonial path that begins at a half-moon plaza and rises through broad stone steps, flanked by pines and cypress trees, to a memorial hall and, beyond it, the circular burial chamber at the uppermost terrace. The plan, laid out in the form of a warning bell when seen from above, encodes the political symbolism of the new republic, and the cumulative effect of climbing the hundreds of steps toward the white marble and blue-tiled memorial hall is deliberately staged to inspire awe. Inside the memorial hall sits a seated statue of Sun, while the burial chamber beyond holds a recumbent effigy over the crypt itself. The view back down the axis, across the forested mountain slope toward the plains of Nanjing, is among the most iconic in the city.

For foreign visitors, the mausoleum is one of the essential sites in Nanjing. It is the single most important republican-era monument in China and the place where the political story that shaped modern China is most concretely visible. The climb is substantial — the full flight of steps is demanding in summer heat — and the site can draw very large crowds, particularly on weekends, holidays, and around the anniversary of Sun's death. Arriving early helps. The mausoleum sits within easy walking distance of Ming Xiaoling and the broader Purple Mountain park, so it pairs naturally with those sites, though the combination makes for a long and physically demanding day. Even visitors with limited time in Nanjing usually find the climb worthwhile, both for the monument itself and for the view from the top.
