The Confucius Temple–Qinhuai Scenic Belt is the collective name for the historic riverside district along the Qinhuai River in southern Nanjing, centered on the Confucius Temple complex and stretching along the waterway that for centuries defined the city's commercial, literary, and pleasure-seeking life. Rather than a single site, the belt brings together a network of restored traditional streets, canalside promenades, temples, gardens, and the former imperial examination compound, presenting the most concentrated and most visited stretch of old Nanjing in a walkable, easily navigable package.

The Qinhuai River has been the heart of Nanjing's urban life since the city became a southern capital, and the lanes running back from its banks were historically home to scholars preparing for the exams, merchants supplying the capital, and the teahouses, restaurants, and entertainment venues that gave the district its reputation in Chinese literature. The modern scenic belt preserves and reinterprets that heritage through restored facades, lantern-lit walkways, and a sequence of small museums and historic buildings that trace the district's layered past, including the elegant former residence of the Ming-era statesman Xu Da and the old examination cells of the Jiangnan Gongyuan. The Qinhuai lantern festival, held each year around the Lunar New Year, is one of the most famous in China and transforms the area into a dense display of handcrafted lanterns.

For foreign visitors, the scenic belt is best explored on foot and by river cruise, ideally across an afternoon that extends into the evening, since the district is at its most striking after dark when the lanterns, shopfronts, and reflected lights along the water give the lanes their classic atmosphere. The area can be crowded, particularly on weekends and during holidays, but the density of sights — temple, exam hall, gardens, food streets, and riverside walks — justifies the time. It is the most rewarding single neighborhood in Nanjing for visitors who want to combine history, food, and street-level exploration, and it serves as a natural introduction to the city's southern-capital character. Most travelers find a half-day enough for a first visit, with a return evening worthwhile for the lanterns alone.
