Giới thiệu về Bảo tàng Khoa cử Trung Quốc (Cống viện Giang Nam)

The China Imperial Examination Museum, built on the site of the historic Jiangnan Gongyuan in the Confucius Temple district of southern Nanjing, is the most important museum in China devoted to the imperial civil-service examination system that shaped Chinese government, education, and social life for more than a millennium. The Jiangnan Gongyyan was once among the largest examination compounds in the empire, the site where tens of thousands of candidates from the wealthy southern provinces gathered to sit the grueling exams that could elevate them into the official bureaucracy, and the museum is built directly into the archaeological remains of that compound.

The museum's design is one of the most striking of any recent Chinese cultural institution. Visitors descend into a deep, layered underground space carved out beneath the old examination-yard foundations, moving through a sequence of galleries that trace the exam system from its early Tang-dynasty origins through its mature Ming and Qing form to its abolition at the close of the imperial era. Displays include examination cells reconstructed at their original cramped scale, model essays, ink stones, calling cards, and admission tickets — the material culture of a system whose stakes, rituals, and terrors shaped the imagination of every educated Chinese man for centuries. The architecture, with its long ramped descent and its buried-crypt atmosphere, is itself part of the interpretation, conveying something of the claustrophobic pressure of the examination experience.

For foreign visitors, the museum provides essential background for understanding the Confucius Temple district as a whole, since the temple, the exam compound, and the scholarly life of the neighborhood were historically inseparable. It is also one of the most effective single introductions anywhere in China to the examination system that so profoundly shaped Chinese — and by extension East Asian — culture and governance. A visit typically fills a couple of hours, and because the museum is underground, it is a particularly good choice during the heat of a Nanjing summer or on rainy days. It pairs naturally with the adjacent Confucius Temple, the Zhanyuan garden, and the Qinhuai riverfront into a full day's walking itinerary through the southern heritage district. Travelers with an interest in Chinese intellectual history tend to find it one of the most rewarding stops in the city.

At the core of the Confucius Temple–Qinhuai belt, the Imperial Examination Museum rises on the Jiangnan Examination Hall, founded in 1168 in the Southern Song. At its Ming-Qing height the hall could seat over twenty thousand candidates at once, the largest exam ground in Chinese history. The museum joins a main building, the south garden and the Mingyuan Tower ruins; its sunken main hall preserves the tower, exam cells and stone inscriptions and gathers artefacts of the examination system and its culture — a rare underground themed museum.

Tham quan: Descending into the sunken galleries feels like entering the depths of exam history: cramped recreated cells, rolls of successful candidates and stone-carved papers line the way, while climbing Mingyuan Tower offers a view over the whole hall and a sense of the centuries-long path to office and Jiangnan's scholarly fervour.
