The Frontier Town Forest Theater Show is one of Fenghuang's best-known evening performances, staged in a purpose-built amphitheater set into a wooded hollow within the town. Taking its name from Shen Congwen's classic novella Border Town, set in the Fenghuang area, the show translates the region's Miao and Tujia culture and the novella's romantic, riverside atmosphere into a large-scale outdoor spectacle.

The production uses the natural terrain and surrounding forest as part of its set, with a tiered stage backed by towering old trees and a striking display of lighting and water effects that appear to cascade down the hillside in time with the music. Clusters of illuminated stilted-house structures create a dreamlike backdrop, while a large suspended screen and choreographed water jets add further visual layers above the stage. Costuming is a major feature of the show, with hundreds of elaborate outfits on display over the course of the performance, culminating in an elaborate traditional wedding scene featuring a red Miao headdress, heavy silver ornamentation, and a long trailing gown, staged as the dream sequence of the story's heroine.

Seating is arranged in front and rear sections split into a central block with side blocks on either side, separated by a walkway that includes a smaller premium seating area in the middle; seats in the side blocks closest to the central aisle generally still offer a good view. Because premium seating is limited, it is worth arranging tickets ahead of an evening visit. The show makes a memorable way to close out a day in Fenghuang, following an afternoon in the old town with an evening of large-scale theater rooted in local legend and landscape.
