Giới thiệu về Cố cư Thẩm Tùng Văn
The Former Residence of Shen Congwen sits on Zhongying Street in the heart of Fenghuang Ancient Town and is one of the most visited literary sites in the region. It is often said that the wider world came to know Fenghuang largely through Shen Congwen, the writer whose novellas and essays, including Border Town, Random Sketches on the Xiang River, and his autobiography, carried the town's riverside life and Miao and Tujia culture to readers far beyond Hunan.
The residence is the house where Shen Congwen was born, and it survives as a courtyard-style compound built in the regional Xiangxi style, with architectural details that reflect the late Ming and Qing building traditions common to the area. Wooden beams, carved details, and a traditional layout give visitors a sense of the domestic setting that shaped Shen Congwen's early years before he left Fenghuang for a literary career elsewhere in China. Displays inside typically include personal items, photographs, and information about his life and writing, offering context for readers who have encountered his work and an introduction for those who have not.
A visit usually takes less than an hour, making the residence an easy stop to fold into a walk through the old town's central streets rather than a separate excursion. For visitors who already know Shen Congwen's writing, seeing the house where he grew up adds a personal dimension to Fenghuang's riverside scenery; for those unfamiliar with his work, the residence offers a good entry point into understanding why this particular writer is so closely tied to the town's identity. Many travelers combine the stop with nearby lanes and the riverside promenade for a morning of gentle sightseeing.
Di sản văn hóa
The Former Residence of Shen Congwen stands on Zhongying Street in the old town, a courtyard house steeped in western-Hunan character with a clear Ming-Qing style, where the literary master Shen Congwen (1902–1988) was born and spent his childhood. Of Miao descent, Shen wrote more than five million words in his lifetime and his masterpiece Border Town has been translated into dozens of languages; as the saying goes, "to know Fenghuang is to begin with Shen Congwen," and the house has become a place of pilgrimage for countless readers. Shen returned to his hometown in 1982.
Tham quan: Through the gate one finds the four-sided courtyard of main hall, side rooms and sky-well, with Shen's manuscripts, letters, editions and life photographs laid out inside, recreating his literary life and his bond with his hometown; standing in the yard, one can almost hear the story of Cuicuo and Nuosong from Border Town unfolding in the misty rain of western Hunan, an essential stop for grasping the spirit of Fenghuang.
