Bãi Ngũ Sắc

Five-Color Beach, sometimes translated as Multi-Color Beach and known locally as Sesame Beach, is a striking stretch of volcanic coast on the east side of Weizhou Island, and one of the most geologically dramatic sites on an island already famous for its geology. Unlike the pale sandy beaches on the island's west coast, Five-Color Beach offers something rarer and stranger, a shore of black volcanic sand and pebbles set against sculpted sea cliffs, and for many travelers it leaves a stronger impression than anywhere else on Weizhou.

The beach takes its colloquial name, Sesame Beach, from the appearance of the sand. Here there is no quartz-white shore: instead, the constant grinding of waves on volcanic rock and shell has produced a dark sand and pebble mix in which pale fragments stand out against the black ground like specks of sesame. The effect is subtle up close and dramatic from a distance, especially when the wet sand catches the light, and the layered colors of the surrounding cliffs give the whole cove the multicolored character from which the formal name, Five-Color Beach, is drawn.

What truly sets the site apart, however, are its erosion landforms. The eastern coast of Weizhou is exposed to the full force of the South China Sea, and the soft volcanic bedrock has been carved into a sequence of sea cliffs, wave-cut platforms, and sea caves that rank among the most spectacular of their kind on the southern Chinese coast. Even visitors who have already explored the volcanic landscapes at Crocodile Mountain tend to find Five-Color Beach more dramatic, in large part because the erosion features here are deeper, taller, and more concentrated along a relatively short stretch of shore.

Timing matters at Five-Color Beach. At high tide the foreshore is largely submerged and the experience is far less rewarding, so checking the tide tables and timing a visit for the hours around low tide is essential. At low water, the wave-cut platforms open up for walking, the sea caves become accessible, and the patterns of the volcanic rock and the overlying cliffs emerge in full detail. Sunrise is particularly beautiful here, since the beach faces directly east over the open sea, and many visitors combine an early-morning visit with breakfast back at their guesthouse.

Five-Color Beach is best treated as a complementary site to Crocodile Mountain rather than a substitute, since the two showcase different sides of Weizhou's volcanic geology, and together they form the visual and scientific core of any island visit. Sturdy shoes with good grip are essential for walking the wet rocks, and sun protection and water are important on the exposed shore. For international visitors with an interest in coastal geology, photography, or simply unusual landscapes, Five-Color Beach is one of the most rewarding single spots on any Beihai itinerary.
