Beihai Underwater World is one of the largest and most established aquariums in southern China, a national-level marine science education base that combines large-scale live exhibits with family-friendly shows and themed installations. The aquarium holds nearly nine thousand tons of seawater across thirty-eight thousand square meters of display space, an unusually large footprint by Chinese aquarium standards. Its twenty-seven themed zones take visitors on a deliberately theatrical journey: a Sunken City, a hundred-meter sea-tunnel, a 360-degree wraparound underwater journey, a Great Barrier Reef and shark hall, an Amazon rainforest zone, a Mayan hillside, a polar penguin hall, and many more. The mix of regional ecosystems with set-piece fantasy environments gives the experience the feel of a themed attraction as much as a conventional aquarium.

The live collection is broad, ranging from sharks, rays, sea turtles, and large Pacific reef fish to jellyfish, seahorses, and the colorful smaller species of the Indo-Pacific. Among the headliners are the giant manta rays, which have their own themed hall and star in dedicated daily performances, and a rotating cast of sea lions, penguins, and other crowd favorites that appear across the day's schedule of shows. Information panels and feeding demonstrations help translate the displays into something more educational, in keeping with the aquarium's science-education role.

Daily performances are a major part of the experience, and planning your visit around the show schedule is worthwhile. Underwater performances, including feeding dives and themed presentations, run several times through the day in the main tanks, while sea-lion shows and other live animal presentations run on a parallel schedule. Lines build before each performance, so arriving early for the more popular shows is wise, especially on weekends and during school holidays.

Most visitors spend two to four hours here, depending on the age and attention span of the group. The aquarium is fully indoors, which makes it an excellent choice for hot summer afternoons, rainy days, or any time the beach needs a break. It pairs naturally with the Silver Beach and the old streets for a varied Beihai day, and for families in particular it provides a reliable, high-quality anchor that will fill a half-day with very little effort and very little risk of disappointment.
