The Sino-Soviet Golden Street Pedestrian Mall is one of the principal walking streets of central Manzhouli and a concentrated expression of the frontier-city character that defines this border town. The street preserves the architecture of the early twentieth century Middle East Railway period, when Manzhouli was a key station on the line that linked the Russian rail network with the Chinese Northeast, and the onion-domed, pastel-painted facades along the street still carry the imprint of that era.

The architecture is what gives the street its distinctive character. Russian-style domes, ornamental cornices, and stained-glass windows line the pedestrian zone, and the warm yellow lighting that bathes the buildings in the evening gives the whole street an unmistakably exotic feel for a Chinese city. The central tramway tracks embedded in the roadway, which historically marked the change of gauge between the Russian broad-gauge and the Chinese standard-gauge systems, are still visible and serve as a reminder of why Manzhouli grew up at this particular point on the map.

The street is also one of the best places in Manzhouli to encounter the cross-border commercial life of the city. Shops selling Russian chocolate, honey, vodka, matryoshka dolls, and other imported goods line the sidewalk, and many of the vendors and customers in the evening crowd are Russian travelers who have crossed the border for shopping, dining, or leisure. The mix of Chinese and Russian in the air, on the shop signage, and in the conversation around the food stalls gives the street an atmosphere that is rare anywhere else in China.

For visitors, the Sino-Soviet Golden Street is best experienced on foot and in the evening, when the lighting, the crowds, and the atmosphere of the border town are at their fullest. The street sits at the center of Manzhouli and pairs naturally with a wider walk through the historic architecture of the surrounding blocks.
