The Manzhouli National Gate Scenic Area is the city's signature landmark and the most important single destination for any traveler visiting the Chinese side of the China-Russia border. Located at the rail and road crossing between Manzhouli and the neighboring Russian town of Zabaikalsk, the scenic area is built around the great white National Gate itself, the fifth-generation structure that now faces its Russian counterpart across the border and serves as the symbolic threshold between the two countries.

The current gate is a milky-white structure more than thirty meters high and some forty meters wide, wide and tall enough to span the multiple railway tracks that carry international freight between the two countries. Visitors can climb to an upper viewing platform on the Chinese side from which, on clear days, the Russian border town, the rolling grasslands of the Trans-Baikal, and the long ribbon of the border itself become visible to the north. The platform has made the gate the single most popular photo stop in Manzhouli, and it carries a weight of historical and civic symbolism that goes beyond the scenic.

The wider scenic area includes several memorials and exhibition halls that document the layered history of this border crossing. The Red Tourism Exhibition Hall, the memorial hall dedicated to a historic congress of the Chinese Communist Party held abroad, and the sites associated with the secret cross-border transport routes of earlier periods are all gathered here, and together they trace the role that Manzhouli has played as a corridor between China and the wider socialist world during the twentieth century.

For travelers, the National Gate is the unmissable stop of a visit to Manzhouli, and it is most naturally combined with the No. 41 boundary marker, the viewing tower, and the wider border tourist area that surround it. The combination of the architectural monument, the historical displays, and the long view into a neighboring country gives the site a unique character on the Chinese tourist circuit.
