The full rafting course runs about 5 kilometers along the Tuolong Gorge, with a total vertical drop of roughly 299 meters — one of the largest cumulative drops of any commercial rafting route in central China. The gorge itself is steep-walled and thickly forested, with hanging cliffs, waterfalls, and deep green pools between rapids, and the river gradient produces a continuous series of fast chutes and pools that keep rafters engaged from start to finish. One of the most unusual features of the route is the "Nine Sons of the Dragon" cave sequence. Nine large natural boulders straddle the river at intervals, forming short natural tunnels through which the rafts pass as they descend the gorge. For international visitors, Tuolongxia is a full-day excursion from Yueyang city. The drive out to Pingjiang County takes well over an hour, and a half-day should be allowed on site for the rafting itself plus preparation and changing time. The trip is best suited to travelers who are comfortable in water, in reasonable physical condition, and visiting in the warmer months between late spring and early autumn, when water levels and temperatures make the run most enjoyable.
