Zhangguying Village, located in Zhangguying Town in Yueyang County, is one of the most complete and distinctive surviving ancient villages in central China. With a continuous history of more than 500 years, the village preserves more than 1,700 buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, arranged in a remarkable pattern of interlinked courtyards that has earned it the nickname "the first village of folk architecture in southern China." For international travelers interested in vernacular architecture, clan history, or rural Chinese life, Zhangguying is one of the most rewarding half-day trips from the city of Yueyang.

The village was founded by the Zhang clan, whose descendants still live here, and the layout reflects the social and family organization of a traditional Chinese lineage village. The most architecturally significant compounds — known as the "Upper New Layer," the "Stone Great Gate," and the "Pan Family Nook" — are arranged on three different axes and connected by a continuous roof system that allows a resident to walk across much of the village without ever stepping outside. This design created shelter from rain and sun, supported a tight-knit clan community, and remains one of the most sophisticated vernacular spatial solutions in Chinese village architecture.

Each compound follows a four-court depth sequence — entrance hall, meeting hall, ancestral hall, and rear hall — connected by passageways, side rooms, and three internal skywells that bring in light, air, and rainwater. The skywells, a hallmark of southern Chinese domestic architecture, serve both practical and cosmological functions, channeling rainwater into the household drainage system while symbolizing the gathering of wealth and fortune. The wood carvings, stone lintels, tiled eaves, and paved courtyards are all executed in regional Hunanese style, distinct from the vernacular architecture of Jiangnan or southern Fujian.

For international visitors, Zhangguying is best experienced as a slow walk through the interlinked courtyards, ideally with a local guide or a translation app to explain the symbolism of the carvings and the history of the Zhang clan. The village is still inhabited, which means the streets feel alive — older residents cook in courtyard kitchens, children play in the lanes, and small stalls sell local foods and handicrafts. Allow a half-day to reach the village from Yueyang, explore the main compounds, and enjoy the surrounding countryside before returning to the city.
