자성 고현성 소개

Cicheng Ancient Town is a well-preserved county-seat town on the northern outskirts of Ningbo, with a history stretching back well over a thousand years. Laid out in the classic grid pattern of an imperial-era Chinese county town, it retains its old street network, city walls, temples, and administrative buildings, alongside whole streets of Ming and Qing dynasty houses. For travelers who want a quieter, more authentic alternative to the heavily visited water towns, it is a hidden gem in the Ningbo region.

The old town is laid out along a clear north-south axis, with a restored Confucian temple, a former county magistrate's yamen, and a city god temple forming the institutional heart of the settlement. Branching off from these landmarks are quiet residential lanes lined with grey-brick courtyard houses, stone lintels, and occasional grand mansions that hint at the wealth of past local families. Many of these homes are still lived in, giving the town a working, lived-in atmosphere rather than a museum-piece feel.

Cicheng is also known for its food, and the local snack stalls and small restaurants are a major draw for day-trippers from Ningbo. The most famous specialty is the chewy, fragrant Cicheng rice cake, which has been featured on national television and comes in many savory and sweet variations. Walking the lanes and stopping for a bowl of noodles or a plate of stir-fried rice cakes is one of the simplest and most genuine pleasures of a visit here.

Cicheng is an easy half-day trip from central Ningbo, and its quiet streets make a peaceful contrast to the city's busier sights. Allow two to three hours to explore at a relaxed pace, and try to visit on a weekday, when the lanes are at their most peaceful. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the old streets. For travelers interested in traditional architecture, county-town history, and honest local food, Cicheng is one of the most rewarding and least crowded stops on any Ningbo itinerary.

Cicheng lies in Ningbo's Jiangbei district and served for over 1,200 years as the seat of Cixi county from 738 in the Tang dynasty, making it the best-preserved ancient county town in Jiangnan, hailed as "the foremost ancient county town south of the Yangtze." It keeps the Tang-era grid plan, laid out like a chessboard along a central axis, and retains its Ming-Qing town form together with nearly 600,000 square meters of historic buildings, now a national key cultural-relic site. Its Confucian temple is the most intact academy-temple in eastern Zhejiang, which along with the old yamen, examination hall, Daoist temple and the Feng-Yu residence forms a deep current of Confucian learning.

관람 안내: Walking Cicheng's old flagstone streets, the chessboard of lanes leads you to one historic building after another, the solemn Confucian temple, the imposing yamen, the elegant officials' houses, as if time itself slows here. There is no manufactured bustle, only the composure and bookish air of an old Jiangnan county, a place to slow your pace and feel the breathing of a thousand-year-old town amid its scholarly grace.
