The Old Bund is a historic riverfront district at the very heart of Ningbo, at the point where three rivers meet. Less well known internationally than its counterpart in Shanghai, it actually predates the more famous waterfront by some two decades, making it one of the oldest foreign concession areas in China. Today it is one of Ningbo's most beloved landmarks and a pleasant place to spend an evening.

The district preserves a handsome collection of early twentieth-century European-style buildings, including former consulates, churches, merchant houses, and customs offices that once served the busy port. Many of these old facades have been thoughtfully restored and converted into cafes, wine bars, restaurants, boutique shops, and small galleries, so the historic architecture remains very much in use. A walk along the cobbled lanes reveals a layered cityscape where East meets West, and where Ningbo's long history as a trading port is written in brick and stone.

As night falls, the Old Bund comes alive. The illuminated riverside promenade fills with locals and visitors out for an evening stroll, while the bars and restaurants behind the facades open their doors and spill tables out onto the lanes. The atmosphere is cosmopolitan and relaxed, with live music drifting from some venues and the lights of boats on the river creating a romantic backdrop. For dinner, drinks, or a simple walk after dark, it is one of the most enjoyable corners of the city.

The Old Bund sits in central Ningbo at the meeting point of the Yao, Fenghua, and Yong rivers, making it easy to reach and easy to fold into a day of city sightseeing. It pairs naturally with a Three Rivers night cruise, which departs from the nearby pier, or with a visit to the historic Catholic church just up the road. Best visited from late afternoon into the evening, when the buildings are lit and the dining scene comes alive, it offers travelers a charming and very social taste of contemporary Ningbo against a backdrop of genuine history.
