For international visitors, it is one of the clearest windows onto contemporary urban leisure culture in a northwestern Chinese city.

The street's design draws on the visual vocabulary of the traditional Chinese commercial street, with rebuilt period architecture, tiled roofs, lanterns, and decorative detailing that reference the vernacular building traditions of the Gansu region.
